Remember when I mentioned in this post wanting to replace the grey cabinet in the dining room with a skinny hutch!?  Well, I found a really cool looking piece on good ole Craigslist of course.  I just love it when I want something but when I'm not really looking for it, it just finds me instead.  When I saw it I new it would be perfect. This piece is great, it has everything I am looking for, it's tall, skinny, not too deep, it has storage and a display area on top.  It is so different looking too, I love how the display door has an oval shaped glass, and the bottom is so leggy and open.  The knobs are pretty cool looking too with the brass round plate surrounding the actual wooden knob.  It is solid wood and inside the drawer is a little metal plate that reads Watkins Brothers Inc. We have owned our Ikea Kivik loveseat and chaise combination for almost 4 years.  When we bought it their wasn't much information or reviews out there for us to go on because it was relatively new to the market.   So if you are in the market for a new couch and you have been looking at this particular couch here is my opinion (not sponsored) based  on our 4 years of living with it.  First I will explain our reasons for buying this couch and then I will highlight the good and the bad in a pros and cons list.  You will see that it is kind of a love and hate relationship, I can imagine we have all encountered this type of relationship at some point in our lives. Last time when I shared the Lightening up the Kitchen  post, I shared this picture below of where the refrigerator is placed but I left out the after pictures from this view. We switched out the old refrigerator that came with the house with a stainless steel one and we added a little floating recycling center on the wall to make it more functional.  The door-less cabinet is still in the same state and I know now it looks a little off  and the fridge isn't as close to the wall as it should be because of the baseboard heater.  I really feel like the fridge should be moved to face the other side of the kitchen for a better flow between work stations.  If we do that we would have to move the cabinet on top and replace the trim, it seems simple but there's a lot more work involved that we don't have time for right now.  Instead we focused on making it more functional for the time being. I was doing a little clean up in the living room and rearranging of accessories and I wanted to share what works for me when styling my table tops.  I like having having different types of tables and cabinets for different functions but I also want them to look nice while serving their purpose, that's where the toppings come in.  My favorite table top toppings are plants, I have one on almost every horizontal surface.  They are beautiful, add color, texture, natural elements and they also help clean the air.  When styling my table tops I like to keep things simple so it doesn't look too cluttered.  Plus, why would I want an end table that's so cluttered I can't even put my glass of wine on it?  I have learned that working in odd numbers and using variation of heights and textures looks best and keeps the eyes moving. When we bought our new house we inherited a  fugly kitchen.  From day one I started thinking of some inexpensive, quick fixes we could do to make it more our style until we could afford a major remodel. The kitchen walls were painted a dark blue, and the cabinets are white on top and black on the bottom.  They are painted in flat finish and they were not primed, you know what that means, right?  When you try to clean them the paint comes off and all the dirt, oil and wine splatters are absorbed into the flat finish, leaving dingy splotches everywhere.  Even the ceiling is painted in flat white and it has wine splatters on it.  I know what you are thinking, how on earth does one get wine up on the ceiling?  It's irrelevant! On my way back from taking my daughter to school I spotted a bar stool waiting to catch a lift from the dumpster truck, instead I gave her a lift on my pick up truck and brought her home with me.  Classy eh!  The top was constructed of some pretty solid rattan material and the bottom of sturdy, leggy, metal.  She was in perfect shape I don't know why they let her go but now she's in good hands.
