Plans For The Dining Room

We have a couple new of plans for the dining room.  When we first moved in, we painted the room in a nice, bright, very light grey and refinished the floors.  We wanted it to feel light and fresh.  Then we hung some floating shelves to display some of my favorite things, added window treatments, plopped our furniture there and called it "good for now!"   You can see what the room looked like here!   Fast forward a year later, we've had time to figure out what works, what doesn't and put a plan together.  I made a little mood board to help visualize what we want for the space.  I know the space is small and small rooms call for round tables.  But some rules were meant to be broken, for the sake of happy living.  I shared in our first dining room post that we wanted to possibly build our old modern farmhouse dining table again.  Instead, I went crazy over a Parsons table I found on Craigslist and we bought it! I'm contemplating on keeping two of the Windsor chairs

How To DIY Wood Knobs

When we painted our kitchen cabinets we wanted to save money anywhere we could.  We reused the pulls for the bottom cabinets and decided to DIY our own wood knobs for the top cabinets.  It's really no surprise that we decided to DIY them because we love to DIY everything.  I wanted the knobs to have some personality but still be clean and simple.   Here's a simple tutorial on how to DIY wood knobs. Supplies 1-1/8 in. x 48 in. wood round dowel  5/16 in. t nuts 1-1/4 in. round head screws Steps Cut the dowel at 1-1/4 in. lengths in the quantity you need Sand edges lightly by hand just to take off any splinters left from cutting Mark the center of each dowel Drill hole in each center to fit t nuts Hammer the t-nuts in to the holes you pre-drilled Stain or paint knobs in your choice of color Screw them into your cabinets or furniture  That's it! Now you can gaze at your pretty knobs.  You can DIY your own wood knobs for a fraction of the cost of buying new ones, and they are ve

Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Reveal

Finally, I'm going to share the kitchen cabinet makeover reveal!  It took us a lot longer than we expected to get this done. But we are finally putting the paint brushes and the rollers down.  At least until we recoup from all the unplanned painting we did these past few weeks.  We didn't have a plan for this or a budget because it wasn't in the cards to do this project just yet.  I don't know if you recall from this  post but this all started because I wanted a cup of tea .  First I just wanted to do a quick reorganization, then I started  pulling off contact paper , next thing you know I'm removing doors and  stripping paint off the kitchen cabinets .  We didn't think things through we just went with it.  Before we had clumpy, flat painted ugly cabinets.  I'm not exaggerating, you can see for yourself here .  Whenever we would clean a them the paint would come off because they were not primed.  They were painted with a flat, cheap paint that would absorb s

Refinished Roll Top Desk

This is my first ever refinished roll top desk!!!!!!  This was, gosh , I am not going to lie, a little bit of an intimidating project for me. When my customer arrived with the bookshelf I was going to paint for her, she also brought a little desk and a chair and asked if I could refinish them too.  Of course I said "sure!"  Inside I was thinking, this looks tricky with the roll top and the cubbies but I was still confident I can do it, I just wasn't sure what techniques I had to use.  She didn't need it right away so I had plenty of time to study the desk and research techniques that I could use on it.   Before both pieces Before, very and white film over stain Before, gap on top of roll top cover, black burn mark I decided I was going to sand the whole thing down and re-stain it.  First I had to take it apart into as many pieces as I could.  I removed the drawers, took four screws off from underneath the desk top to remove the top with the cubbies and slid off the ro

Ikea Kitchen Wish List

With the kitchen cabinet makeover moving in full swing, a little Ikea shopping trip is in order.  I made a mood board for my Ikea kitchen wish list of all the goodies we want to grab on our next visit. We are lucky enough to have an Ikea about one hour away but I still like to make a list so that we don't have to make multiple trips in a short period of time. The first thing that I need to address in the kitchen is organization.  We have been living in this house for about a year and there's a great deal of disorganization. When things are unorganized, they just don't function well, and it drives me bonkers!  Which is why this whole kitchen cabinet makeover fiasco started in the first place, you can read more about that in this post.   I also want to take this as an opportunity to replace some of the kitchen's most daily used items that have seen better days and top it off with some pretty accessories! Ikea Kitchen Wish list These Stodja Flatware trays will sit perfect

Stripping Paint Off Kitchen Cabinets

Last week when I was lining the kitchen cabinets , we decided it was time to give our kitchen cabinets a makeover.  In order to do so we will be stripping paint off the kitchen cabinets.  The kitchen was painted in a classic combination of white uppers and black lowers.  The colors were great but the finish on the cabinets was HORRIBLE!!!!!  I'm not exaggerating!  See for yourself.... Glopped on layers of thick paint in a flat finish.  A ballillion brush marks. Every time I would wipe the cabinets down paint would rub off.  This paint job was a total half ass attempt to make the kitchen look better so that it could sell (the cabinets were all black when they first listed but after almost a year of sitting on the market they had to neutralize the color palette in the whole house, I mean they had "Bloody Mary Red" on the walls before and toned it down to a neutral green).  Well we knew from the very moment we saw them that we had to redo them but that didn't bother us,
