A few months ago I shared our dining room with you guys and talked about some possible changes we would be making in the space for the future.  Yesterday I shared our new dining table and chairs , today I want to review our original to do list for the dining room updates.  Let's see what has gotten done, what still needs to get done, and what ideas have been added or changed. Dining Room To Do List First, remove the little black mirror by the shelves, seeing these pictures I'm now sure, I hate it there. Sand, prime, paint the trims and window (you can see the blue tape where I started).  Buy chairs I am not sure what style but they need to be comfy, strong, durable and easy to clean. Build or buy dining table, I think I want to rebuild the same  modern farmhouse dining table  we built for our our previous house but tweaking it a bit so that crumbs don't get stuck in the crannies. After stalking the Ikea website for a month waiting for the chairs to come back in stock, we got'em!  We now have a beautiful combination of skogsta chairs and parsons dining room table.  Our dining room has always suffered from identity crisis.  But it's finally starting to feel more like us. A few weeks ago I shared this mood board for the dining room but some things have already changed.  As you can see we ended up buying four chairs instead of two.  After looking at the mood board a few times something didn't feel right.  I realized I didn't like the way the rounded back of windsor chairs looked next to the flat back of the skogsta chairs.  I was planning on keeping them and painting them black but instead we are just going to build a bench and use the skogsta chairs around.   I like the look of mix matched chairs but this room is small and I think it would look too busy with so many different types of seating.  We are going to keep it ...

A couple of weeks ago I went to a new to me Goodwill store near by and scored some pretty awesome pieces .  One of them was this upholstered top cedar chest made by Lane, it was in pristine condition. I went to Joann's Fabric store with a picture in my mind of what I wanted but when I saw this fabric my whole vision flew out the window and out I went with this fabric.  I loved the big, bold print and the colors where beautiful.  I knew I wanted a color that would pick up from the blues in the fabric.  I had the perfect color Behr's Bermudan Blue.  It's the same color we have on our front door. I removed all twelve-thousand staples (OK, so I exaggerated in this number but that's how tedious removing staples from upholstered pieces is).  The foam underneath was in excellent condition, no stains, yey!  I did however feel like it could use a little batting  so I went back to Joann's and picked up a yard.  The batting gave it a lot more of a plus...

I got this campaign headboard a couple months ago with a bunch of other campaign pieces .  For a while now I have been curious about Americana Decor chalky finish paint so I decided this was a good little piece to try it out.  By the way this is not a sponsored post nor did I receive this product for free.  I bought it at Home Depot because I see it there by the paint mixing booth all the time and it's cheaper than it's competitor brands. The paint is supposed to adhere to just about any surface with out sanding or priming.  I removed the campaign hardware and cleaned the headboard really good and applied the first coat of paint with out doing any other type of prep work.  No sanding and no priming!  I bought the Americana Decor in Carbon which is a nice, rich, black.  The paint went on smooth and dried quickly however I waited until the next day to apply the second coat.  The paint had good coverage but after the second coat I could still see som...

As we are working on our kitchen one big question comes to mind.  What to do with the space over the refrigerator?  The first thing we noticed when we did our first walk through the house is  that the refrigerator was facing in the wrong direction, it just didn't feel right. When we brought in our own refrigerator it became more evident that this was the wrong placement.  There was no kitchen triangle.  You know, the triangle that makes the kitchen flow together and easy to navigate.  Not only that but there's a gap between the wall and the fridge and the other side of the fridge sticks out too much. We turned it around to see how it would look, and it looks and feels so much better.  The refrigerator reflects light off from the window over the sink and the kitchen looks more open which makes it feel bigger and now there's an actual triangle which makes the kitchen work so much smoother too.  These simple things make a world of difference in the w...

We have a couple new of plans for the dining room.  When we first moved in, we painted the room in a nice, bright, very light grey and refinished the floors.  We wanted it to feel light and fresh.  Then we hung some floating shelves to display some of my favorite things, added window treatments, plopped our furniture there and called it "good for now!"   You can see what the room looked like here!   Fast forward a year later, we've had time to figure out what works, what doesn't and put a plan together.  I made a little mood board to help visualize what we want for the space.  I know the space is small and small rooms call for round tables.  But some rules were meant to be broken, for the sake of happy living.  I shared in our first dining room post that we wanted to possibly build our old modern farmhouse dining table again.  Instead, I went crazy over a Parsons table I found on Craigslist and we bought it! When we painted our kitchen cabinets we wanted to save money anywhere we could.  We reused the pulls for the bottom cabinets and decided to DIY our own wood knobs for the top cabinets.  It's really no surprise that we decided to DIY them because we love to DIY everything.  I wanted the knobs to have some personality but still be clean and simple.   Here's a simple tutorial on how to DIY wood knobs. Supplies 1-1/8 in. x 48 in. wood round dowel  5/16 in. t nuts 1-1/4 in. round head screws Steps Cut the dowel at 1-1/4 in. lengths in the quantity you need Sand edges lightly by hand just to take off any splinters left from cutting Mark the center of each dowel Drill hole in each center to fit t nuts Hammer the t-nuts in to the holes you pre-drilled Stain or paint knobs in your choice of color Screw them into your cabinets or furniture  That's it! Now you can gaze at your pretty knobs.  You can DIY your own wood knobs for a fraction of the cost of buyin...
